A Highlander romance with a fantastic paranormal twist! Readers will be entranced by Isabel Cooper's Highland Dragon series.

Legend claims

When Scotland fell to English rule

The Highland dragons took a vow:

Freedom at any price.

The war may be over, but so long as English magic controls the Highlands, not even a dragon laird can keep his clan safe. Cathal MacAlasdair needs a warrior fierce enough to risk everything, yet gifted enough to outwit an enemy more monster than man.

Who he needs is Sophia.

Alchemist Sophia Metzger traveled to Loch Arach in search of knowledge. She never dreamed she'd learn to do battle, ride through the stars on the back of a dragon, or catch the eye of a Highland laird. But as her quest turns to sizzling chemistry and inescapable danger, she'll soon discover the thrill of being caught in a dragon's claws...

Readers devoted and new to Cooper's universe of Highland Dragons in such tales as The Highland Dragon's Lady (2014) will enjoy the start to this prequel series. It's the early fourteenth century, and men like Robert the Bruce are fighting for the Highlands. The MacAlasdair clan adds something different to the battlefield. Each member can turn into a dragon, and some even have magical knowledge. Sophia Metzger isn't a dragon or a magic user of any kind. It's her talent for alchemy that draws Cathal MacAlasdair to her. The two strike a deal to assist each other. Sophia will help Cathal heal a friend who has been cursed by a wizard, and in return, she'll be able to use his dragon scales in experiments. Cathal and Sophia work well together, and soon potions aren't the only thing brewing in the lab. Smart and brilliant Sophia is an excellent match for the powerful Cathal, and their courtship is a delight to read in Cooper's satisfying twist on the Scottish historical trend.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2017, American Library Association.)
